STORMY WEATHER KENNELS

Gene Adams has been training bird dogs for over 40 years! Your dog will be in great hands and will

Gene Adams has been training bird dogs since the age of nine when he started working with his first dog, a springer spaniel.  So, with over 40 years of experience and working with thousands of different dogs, you can bet that your pup will be left in great hands.

Gene’s been fortunate to have run into great bird dog trainers when he first started and along the way.  If he can pass just a sliver of knowledge off to someone who has a passion for bird dogs, then he knows that will be worth more in the long run, because that individual will be able to read a dog better or tailor a training program for a specific dog that might have otherwise been a washout.

His unwavering commitment to clients and their dogs is immeasurable.  If you have questions during your dog’s stay at Stormy Weather Kennels, call Gene, or if you can, see if he’s available for a lesson.  Training dogs is his life and passion, but more than anything he wants your dog to succeed.

 Five Keys to Successful Training:

-Consistency

-Don't change
 methods

-Be patient

-Be repetitive

-Don't get mad

TRAINING TIPS:

  • Young dogs have a relatively short attention span, so keep each session short and never end on a negative.
  • The tone of your voice is something that you should always be conscious of.  A dog can detect 1/10 of a variation in the tone of your voice.
  • Never teach a pointing dog to sit.  It could possibly lead to problems in the field when pressure is needed for a correction.
  • Rewarding a dog is something we all love to do, but in a training session, keep it short and move on.  Too much praise can lead dogs to become too excited, which causes them to loose focus.
    • When praising a soft or timid dog, pet under the chin or down their back.  Stroking or patting the top of the head relates to being dominated by standing over them.
  • Puppy Time is the most important imprinting stages of a dogs life.  Let him be a pup!  Take him to the park, school, or stores.  This is so important to develop socialization in a pup.  Take him to the field and let him bump and chase anything he feels like.  All this interaction will only help when bringing your pup around to a bragging rights hunting dog.
  • Start retrieving with a young pup.  The simplest and easiest way for a pup to develop this is by throwing a small canvas dummy in a hallway or narrow corridor.  This way he has no other choice but to come right back to you.  KEEP IT SHORT!  Two or Three tosses down the hall will really excite him and we want to end when he wants more.  Never let him get bored.  We want to make retrieving one of the most fun and important things a dog can do.
